The town is located in the Beaver Valley where the Beaver River flows into Notawasaga Bay. The town is an amalgamation of the Town of Thornbury  and Collingwood Township. The new town includes the communities of Thornbury, Clarksburg, Craigleith, Ravenna, Banks, Kimberly and Eugenia.

Tourism is the key industry of the community. Visitors to the area enjoy the natural beauty, cycling, hiking the Bruce Trail, and skiing in one of the many ski resorts.

Historically a prime location for apple growing, tourists now enjoy the confections of new vineyards, breweries and cideries which have evolved over the past decade.

The Bruce Trail and Georgian Trail pass through the town. The Kolapore area for mountain biking and cross-country skiing, Metcalfe Rock which is popular with rock climbers as well as the Duncan Crevice Caves Nature Reserve.

Blue Mountain Resort is celebrating its 75 anniversary in 2017.  Jozo Weider, a Czechoslovakian immigrant, opened Blue Mountain in 1941. The first lifts were sleds pulled up the hill by a cable powered by a truck engine.  The First two runs, Schuss and Kandahar, can still be skied today. Today “The Village” hosts more than 1 million visitors a year. “The Mountain”, as the locals call it, is a hub for entertainment all year round. Delicious restaurants range from fine dining to a more casual bar/pub feel. This is where you can try a new restaurant every night.

Besides skiing, “The Mountain”, has many other activities such as hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, zip lining, high ropes, golf and mini golf. Just 3 km from Northwinds beach the locals swim, sailboard, paddle board and fish. With some of the best shopping in the area and beautiful spas, such as Iwa and Scandinave Spa, Blue Mountain has a little something for everyone.
